Tip Calculator

Calculate a tip and split a restaurant bill between people.

Enter the bill amount.

Formula

tip = bill × tip rate ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people

Example

For a $60 bill and a 15% tip, the tip is $9 and the total is $69.

How a tip is calculated

A tip is usually calculated as a percentage of the bill before or after other charges, depending on the convention used by the restaurant or service provider. The calculator separates the tip amount from the final total so the calculation is easy to check.

Practical example

For a 60 bill and an 18% tip, the tip amount is 10.80 and the total is 70.80. If a group is splitting the bill, calculate the tip on the intended bill amount first and then divide the final total according to the group’s arrangement.

Common mistakes

Check whether the displayed bill already includes a service charge. A service charge and a voluntary tip are not necessarily the same thing. Also make sure the calculator’s rate matches the percentage you actually intend to use.

Why the result may differ

Restaurants may use local conventions, rounding rules, or service charges. The tool performs the percentage calculation you enter and does not determine what a particular business expects.
